Post Three
Leaving the damp soils of the valley you start the climb back onto drier soils derived from the Blackheath Beds. In front of you is coppiced sycamore; cut to ground level every 10-15 years, it allows light in spring for a carpet of bluebells.
In the past sycamore wood was used for kitchen work surfaces, spoons etc because it does not taint or stain food.
The flowers are a good source of pollen and nectar for bees and other insects; the seeds are eaten by birds and small mammals.
